It’s been 7 years since I did this, so was working of previous configs. Trying to get my head around NIC Teaming. Going blind spending hours on the internet looking for info on each step of my install. I presently have two configured as Virtual switches which I team within the VM. Still have to figure out the best config. So I teamed all 4 NICs on my servers, then create one virtual switch for each. So if any one, or even two , physical server goes down I can still bring up all VMs, and load balance across still running physical servers.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to confuse you Regarding Hyper-V Server – here is the exact verbiage from the Microsoft website :. Used to store and access files by network users. A user-specific folder is automatically generated in the Users server folder for every network user account that you create.

I’ve never seen them implemented properly in an SMB environment. I’d avoid it. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting.

Colin This will not work. Removing the GUI doesn’t change anything – you need to license R2 Standard if you plan to do this.

You are still dealing with a trial version of Windows Server that needs to be licensed as well as CALs purchased.

Like I said. I’ve done this. On four servers. It does in fact work. RobT64 wrote: Everything I’ve suggested, I’ve done. Hyper-V Server R2 basically only allows you to run the Hyper-V role – the other Server “roles” can’t be install or used on it. Could you please clarify how this works with the license? Cheers, Colin flag Report. Then the licensing is intact. Colin Spice 1 flag Report. Colin That might work, I’ve not tried that.

When I read that Essentials did not support the Hyper-V role I presumed it could not be done that way. If you do that let me know how it goes. I’d be interested to see if it works. Microsoft Hyper-V was first introduced as a free server role within Windows Server Later, a standalone Windows Hyper-V Server was released, the main purpose of which was to provide a virtualization platform which had better capabilities than the Hyper-V role.

In this blog post, we will discuss how Hyper-V Server has changed since its first release and how the new and changed functionality of Hyper-V R2 has affected server virtualization. Hyper-V Server R2 is a free standalone product which provides hypervisor-based virtualization services. Hyper-V virtualizes hardware resources, which allows you to build an environment where multiple operating systems can be managed and configured at the same time.

Each guest OS runs on an isolated VM, with an assigned amount of hardware resources which it can use. Even though Hyper-V R2 can be downloaded for free, you are still required to purchase a license for each guest OS.

Hyper-V R2 includes a command line interface CLI which is used to manage your virtual environment. These management consoles allow you to manage your Hyper-V hosts and virtual machines VMs remotely, as well as monitor the operations running within them.

Moreover, Hyper-V Server includes only the Windows hypervisor, a Windows Server driver model, and supporting components. However, despite its limited functionality, Hyper-V R2 is compatible with the same hardware as Windows Server Thus, Hyper-V R2 has a small footprint and minimal overhead in addition to ensuring efficient resource utilization. As mentioned above, Hyper-V Server supports the same hardware compatibility as the corresponding version of Windows Server.

Therefore, when it comes to Hyper-V installation, hardware requirements for Hyper-V R2 installation and for the Hyper-V role on Windows Server are practically the same. To install Hyper-V R2, check whether your host computer meets the following requirements:. Microsoft’s team has worked hard to improve the functionality of Hyper-V Server and introduced a new and updated set of features and configuration maximums with Hyper-V R2. The main purpose of those features is to ensure better performance and scalability of large virtual environments.

This feature is used to track data about the usage of the physical processor, RAM, storage, and network by selected VMs. Resource metering is not enabled by default and can only be configured by running PowerShell scripts. In this blog post, we are going to demonstrate how to install Hyper-V R2 Core. Select Language , Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method. Select the type of installation you need.

For a clean installation, click Custom: Install the newer version of Hyper-V only advanced. Once the Hyper-V Core installation is complete, you can start configuring your virtual environment using Sconfig tool.

Server configuration options available in the Sconfig menu include:. Most of these configuration options can be easily set if you follow the prompts. In our blog post, we wish to focus on how to configure some of these options.

In the Sconfig menu, type 9 and press Enter , which will open the Date and Time wizard. Make the required changes. Enter 7 to select the Remote Desktop option. Here, you can either enable or disable remote desktop. By selecting the option 4 , the Remote Management menu will open. Here, you can either enable or disable Remote Management by selecting the corresponding number 1 or 2.
