To understand the basics of layers within a composition, think of them as stackable elements, each of which holds part of your image. The place where you view and arrange the order of layers is called the Layers palette. The Layers palette shows individual layers and their content. Every time you open or place images, add text, or draw a shape, the new layer is created in the Layers palette.

With layers, you can do more than just arrange elements in your composition: You can edit each of them individually without affecting the rest of your image. A workflow using layers allow you to stack layers on top of one another other in a non-destructive way. This means you can return to the edit and alter any layer without any deterioration to the image quality.

Notice the Layers menu is now displayed on the left hand side of the workspace. Let me show you how to create these, and how to implement them into a photo editing workflow. Once the Transform tool is turned on, you’ll notice black layer handles appear around the selected layer on the canvas. Drag one of the handles to start transforming the layer:. Drag the midpoint handles to slant two adjacent layer corners at the same time, leaving the other two corners untouched.

Important: Changing the perspective of text layers converts them into shape, so you can no longer change their font, typeface, or alignment.
