These rights might include VDA rights. It seems very specific that they bough 15 PCs but only 10 Enterprise licenses, there must have been a reason, otherwise why not buy Enterprise for all 15 or for none of them.

Also I’d like to note Enterprise in Windows 10 allows for greater control over update installation too. Without resorting to trickery etc Alex: You may have misunderstood my post.

I want to get rid of Enterprise on all I may have had a type-o in there, I’m sorry. I’m in contact with the CFO and they used a consultant, who in turn I found out used a friend for the vendor for these computers and the licensing. Multiply this by another computers and the hospital would be out of business in a year. This is a rural non-profit hospital that is way in the hole at the moment.

We do not need any of the functionality of Windows 10 Enterprise. We are functioning with all other computers on Windows 7 pro, which needs to be replaced after I get this situation taken care of. Hugo How do I get the original product keys for these 15 machines? Getting the keys from the vendor is not an option. This was my dilemma in the first place. I’m not sure that these computers have ever had registered copy of Windows 10 Pro prior to the activation with Enterprise OK, it actually sounds though like the vendor may have you on Microsoft which would include Office services if that is the case, you should be able to discontinue the service if it is billed monthly via CSP easily, and a change of the license key back to OEM should rectify the installed version and make you compliant.

But I’d verify what the subscription service is and that you are month to month and not on a longer contract like SA and the vendor is only billing you monthly for it. If it is Microsoft make sure you get those users moved to Office if you need those services.

If I were you and you really think this vendor is a crook I’d send a return receipt letter formally giving 30 days of cancellation unless a contract with the vendor specifies a different time notification frame like 60 or 90 days.

Also please note if they didn’t have a valid OEM key sold with the machine you will need to buy licenses and keys at retail price or Volume license Get-Genuine kits. I’d also note if you are a non profit you should be getting a better deal on the pricing if you are subscription. Excellent advice Alex! And it is Microsoft I’m still ignorant on how to change the license key back to OEM status for the computers in question.

How do you revert back to the OEM? As I said, I do not have any product keys. You need to keep in mind that we are not dealing with an Entity like HP here I have a quote from HP that is really good for the rest of the or so computers I plan to procure. The IT team prior to my arrival was being influence to bad decision from a outside consultant. This vendor actually built the computers himself, from what I gather.

I could be wrong. I also on a side note believe that you still need an underlying qualifying OS, either Win 7, 8, 8. Dbeato provided you with the script to change the key back to pro in the first post I think once you have the key from Powershell or from buying a new copy. So they certainly could have provided it, if they did I don’t know though. That would suggest they did not provide an OEM copy, that does not mean they might not have had a paper license for OEM, or a retail license for Windows 10, but they should have provided those if there were and they would be filed somewhere.

Of course if they are a bad vendor they may not have bought them or may not have given them to you. You can ask if they or the old consultant have actual keys for OEM or retail on them, though don’t know how cooperative they will be if they do have them. But before I bought new licenses I’d ask since each license will run you a couple hundred bucks probably, unless you can get them retail from someplace like Techsoup though you might be able to get Get-Genuine kits via VL in techsoup if not retail as a non profit if you look around you can probably get a price break on them.

Thanks for all the assistance Alex, I really appreciate you taking the time out and giving me a hand here. It’s tough to walk into a situation that occurred prior to employment and have upper management ask you to rectify it. First I’ll have someone contact the vendor and ask him to provide OEM license keys for the computers. If he does not cooperate, I’ll check into techsoup and see what they may be able to offer.

Happy to help I’ve walked into plenty of Environments that needed some adjustments. Some other methods to check your license key are also provided. Microsoft continues to break paradigms that have been entrenched for decades. If you are familiar with Windows licensing, you know that Windows is typically licensed on a per-device basis and as a perpetual license not a subscription.

Well, you can kiss that paradigm goodbye. With the advent of Windows 10 Enterprise E3 and E5, Windows is now offered on a per-user basis and as a subscription. First of all, what is Windows 10 Enterprise? Simply put, Windows Enterprise is a version of Windows When you buy a new PC, you have to choose which version of Windows 10 to install. Here are the various versions available today:. The farther down the list you go, the more advanced features you receive.

Below is a comparison of the security, business, and advanced features in Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise E3, and Enterprise E5. For a full comparison of these versions, go here or here. Client Hyper-V Device Guard. In other words, if you get a license for Home or Pro, then you can use that version of Windows forever. Meanwhile, Windows 10 Enterprise E3 and E5 are only available as subscription licenses. In other words, you have keep paying the subscription fee each year in order to keep using them.

How do you get the Enterprise version installed on your device? What Microsoft has done here is impressively simple. The Windows 10 Enterprise feature set is now included in a Windows 10 Pro installation. But by default the Enterprise features are turned off. When you apply a subscription license for Windows 10 Enterprise to your Windows 10 Pro machine, those features turn on.

If you subscription expires, those features turn off again. Consequently, Microsoft is able to license Windows 10 Enterprise per user. The add-on license is subscription based, but the base license is perpetual. The add-on subscription license is user-based, but the perpetual base license is still assigned to the device.

This is illustrated in the figure below. Notice how the Windows 10 Pro licenses are tied to the machines while the Windows 10 Enterprise add-on licenses are tied to the user:. And by the way, a subscription to Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 includes the right to turn on the Enterprise features on up to five devices. So in our illustration the user is applying a single subscription to multiple devices.

Each of the base licenses need to be purchased separately, but the three subscription licenses in the illustration are included in a single subscription to Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5. Not a problem. Microsoft recently announced that even users with Windows 7 and Windows 8. In other words, your subscription includes the perpetual base license for Windows 10 Pro and the subscription add-on license for Windows 10 Enterprise.

So with Windows 10 Enterprise, you get a user-based subscription license for the Enterprise version. That said, there is also a way for you to get a device-based subscription license for the Enterprise version. There are two ways to do this. The first way is to buy an upgrade license for Windows 10 Enterprise with Software Assurance. As long as you keep the SA subscription current, then you can keep using the Enterprise version.

However, if your SA ever expires, you lose the Enterprise subscription but get to keep a Windows 10 Pro base license. A word of caution here: before you buy, you need to make sure you have a qualifying base license. For example, a Windows 7 Home license does not qualify as a base license for Windows 10 Enterprise. To get more details, you can download a chart from Microsoft here. The base license will be an OEM license , but you will purchase the SA through one of the volume licensing programs.

Again, as long as you keep the SA current, you have permission to enable the Enterprise features. But if the SA expires, then you get to keep the base license for Windows 10 Pro. It is important to note that if you go this route then you can only enable Windows 10 Enterprise on that one machine. So in our illustration below, our user can only use Windows 10 Enterprise on one device, not multiple devices.

Also note that the Windows 10 Enterprise subscription is tied to the device not the user since this is an SA benefit not an E3 or E5 subscription :. As usual, Microsoft licensing is complicated, but I hope this helps shed some light on the subject. If you have questions about Windows 10 Enterprise E3 and E5, you can check out these resources:. Close Search. Windows as a subscription? Windows licensed per user? You just blew my mind.

Well … sort of. Notice how the Windows 10 Pro licenses are tied to the machines while the Windows 10 Enterprise add-on licenses are tied to the user: And by the way, a subscription to Windows 10 Enterprise E3 or E5 includes the right to turn on the Enterprise features on up to five devices.
