Go to Solution. I was expecting an immediate response, but it took several hours before Windows 10 told me that a previous driver install had failed and I should try the install again. I did the unplug and re-plug again and then got the New Hardware message and the was installed and is working perfectly.

I would recommend you use the Windows built-in drivers to tackle this issue. Windows 10 OS comes with the built-in printer drivers. The drivers will be installed in minutes. Go to Control panel – Devices and printers to check the printer entry and make it as default printer if needed.

Thanks for the reply and glad that the issue is resolved by disconnecting the USB cable and reconnecting it as suggested. Windows Operating Systems are backward compatible for almost all software and devices all the way back to XP. And so is every other OS for previous OS’s.

If they didn’t, they would have been out of business years ago as people would have to buy new PC’s every time they wanted to upgrade to a newer operating system, because the OEM’s are not spending millions to develop software and drivers for newer OS versions. They are old news to them and moved forward to the current models and technology and they made their money already on them.

That’s the unpredictable part of “not supported. Then, one update comes along that changes the code just enough so that the old driver doesn’t work well or at all. If HP isn’t updating the driver to keep up with the changes to Windows, suddenly you’re out of luck. It’s always been this way, actually. Every time a new version of Windows came out there was all kinds of hardware that no longer worked.

The difference between then and now is that in the old days many years would go by between new versions of Windows, and now there’s a new version twice a year. If you want to know why hardware manufacturers stop supporting a product that has been around for so long, just follow the money trail. It costs money to keep on updating drivers, and when a given model stops selling it’s not bringing in money to cover the costs of support. Besides, HP wants us to use its new printers, not the old ones that have been so reliable for us for so many years.
