To prepare for your users wanting to access the Webex App remotely from thin client devices, set up the Webex App on the centralized hosted virtual desktop HVD environment. In Control Hub, you can use an organization-level setting to either enable or disable VDI optimization and detection for your Webex App users.
By default, the setting is enabled. Thin clients are typically lightweight or repurposed computers that users use to establish a remote connection with a centralized HVD server where Webex App is hosted. For full featured meetings with the Webex App , you or your users must install two separate VDI plugins on a thin client. To prepare for your users wanting to access the Webex App remotely from thin client devices, set up Webex App on the centralized hosted virtual desktop HVD environment.
If your organization has its own download site that includes your site-specific Webex App , go to that site and download your organization-specific version. If you use auto-upgrade, we recommend that you move your Control Hub organization to the slow channel.
For more information, see Upgrade Management in this guide. See the following table for explanations of the arguments that you can use when installing Webex App in a VDI environment.
For information about user preferences and how to preserve them, see User preferences. This is useful in a shared environment typically non-persistent VDI. Use this option if you prefer to manually maintain upgrades.
The argument does not affect a non-VDI environment. If using this option, ensure that your organization is configured for slow channel. When installing the bundled components for Webex App, if you have administrative privileges, you can use this argument to lock the version of the app that is used to join meetings, if the version is compatible with the site version.
WebView2 is required for proper operation of Webex. See User preferences for more information. Users may be in a Citrix environment and not have the thin client installed or the virtual channel is disconnected. We support this scenario with fallback to a non-virtual Webex App installation. In this mode, the app shows a warning that the quality of video may be affected. Once the virtual channel is connected, the app can change to VDI mode.
Use this table to understand the different installation combinations and how they affect media optimization for Unified CM, Webex Calling, and calls on Webex App. The roaming database contains all user credentials and preferences, encrypted using AES As a VDI customer, you should always back up the above folder, so that user credentials and preferences are maintained across VDI sessions. Users access the Webex App through a virtualized Windows environment.
Walk through the deployment steps in the Azure admin portal to create the host pool, virtual machines, and related settings. A host pool is a collection of VMs that offer a similar service. Azure indicates when the virtual environment is ready. For specific deployment steps, see the Microsoft documentation on getting started with AVD.
This setting applies across your organization, unlike the installation parameters which affect your deployment at the server level. If you’re unable to install the VDI plugin for your users, walk them through these steps on their thin client devices. If you’re running a bit or bit environment with VMware, make sure you download and install the VDI client that matches the VMware environment.
Webex App needs to be installed on your central HVD environment. Double-click the msi file that you downloaded. To complete the installation, click Finish. You can find the version numbers on the download page. Webex Meetings VDI as a standalone plugin is released every month, but this bundled plugin installer is release bimonthly. Double-click the exe file that you downloaded. Read the welcome screen, which covers the plugin versions that are included in the installer, and then click Next.
For Webex App to function properly for your users, you must use the official thin client plugin from the download site. To confirm, the Health Check shows a connected status for the Virtual Channel. Create an image for the thin clients. On the thin client, install the Webex App VDI plugin; enter your password at the authentication prompt. After you click Install, the Ubuntu Software Center locates and installs the dependency libraries, and then installs the Webex App Client.

Under the registry, enable the vdciscoteams parameter. Because of this third-party integration, you must contact Dell for technical support. For full featured meetings with Webex App , you or your users must either install the bundled VDI plugin or the two separate VDI plugins on a thin client.
You cannot use the bundled VDI plugin package on Linux thin clients. For Linux, you must install the separate VDI plugins. Install only the Webex app in the HVD environment. No other apps are required. Make sure you follow the Full-featured meetings requirements.

Using a thin client device, such as a lightweight PC or laptop, users access Webex App from a remote virtual desktop Citrix or VMware environment. For calls, the media goes directly between users and avoids traversing the data center; for meetings, media goes between the Webex cloud and the user thin clients without another client in the middle. With VDI, instead of a traditional desktop, you have a thin client and a hosted virtual desktop. A thin client is a typically less costly and less powerful device than a desktop computer.
Your organization may even use older, less powerful PCs as thin clients. Your hosted virtual desktop resides in a central server location called a data center.
Your hosted virtual desktop includes your. Using your thin client, you access your hosted virtual desktop over a secure Citrix or VMware connection. Webex App works with VDI. However, sending the additional data that audio and video calls require, through the hosted virtual desktops, causes communications delays.
This limitation is called the “hairpin” effect. However, the full Webex App experience also includes calling and meetings, which require video and audio media processing. Because of a limitation known as the hairpin effect , calling, meeting, and accompanying video capability are not supported without optimization. The additional bandwidth required for calls and video creates a bottleneck at the data center because the media flows from one user to the data center back to another user.
As a result of this unoptimized media path and the lack of easy access to peripherals such as device speakers, microphone, and camera, the user experience is not ideal. To fix the issue of the hairpin effect, the Webex App VDI plugin extends the Cisco collaboration experience to virtual deployments so that users can use the full messaging, meeting, and calling functionality that the Webex App provides. To reduce latency and to enhance media quality, the VDI plugin optimizes the media workflows by streaming media directly between users on thin client endpoints and leverages the hardware of the thin client machines to handle media processing.
This media path does not go through the hosted virtual desktops HVDs. The result is a stable and full-featured calling and meeting experience for your VDI users. In this architecture, the Webex App is installed on the HVD in your VDI environment and required VDI plugins are installed on the user’s thin client typically a lightweight system, like a repurposed laptop or desktop.
With supported versions of Webex App, users can use all of the built-in messaging, meetings, and calling on Webex App functionality on their thin client. When new platforms are added for a specific release, they are included in the notes under the Release tab for that specific release. Compatible VDI plugin versions installed on user thin clients. When a release of Webex App is working with an earlier VDI plugin, the solution is running in backward compatibility mode. In this mode, Webex App VDI also cannot ensure the video quality because some advanced features are still under continuous development and improvement.
See the following list of supported features for backward compatibility mode:. Because of this difference in release schedule, the VDI version of the app does not include features that are released for the standalone version in the odd month. When the VDI version is released in the even month, it catches up on any missed features from the previous month. You must uninstall the app manually in the Windows Control Panel and optionally you can clear the cache. The Citrix Workspace App for Linux connection bar overlaps the remote video or share screen. Webex App does not upgrade itself with every monthly release. It automatically upgrades when a new virtual desktop version becomes available every second month.
You can configure the plugins to automatically upgrade, by setting a registry key on the virtual desktop. This feature helps you to keep the plugins synchronized with the Webex App version. Call history is now in the roaming profile, which means that a Webex VDI user’s call history can be independently preserved across different hosts, or non-persistent sessions. User is only warned if the plugin is incompatible with the Webex App on the virtual desktop.

Before the meeting, the user gets a warning about microphone permissions in case they prevented apps from accessing the microphone. During meeting on Windows version of Webex App, users can receive warnings about microphone or speaker errors.

You can share that information with your administrator so they can help resolve any issues you may be experiencing.
