You can now select specific layers to copy to other images — without replacing the existing layers on the destination photo. You can also copy and apply layers between images with different dimensions, making it easier to streamline a workflow where multiple cameras are used or Styles are applied to Layers.
That means you can edit with the best possible images, no matter the device. Do you shoot high-volume projects like weddings or events? Culling and sorting large sets of photos is now faster than ever in Capture One This feature also works with Sets.
Enjoy a simpler clipboard when copying adjustments. Find tools more easily thanks to default text under the icons. You can toggle this option on and off by right-clicking the toolbar. The cursor tools for masking brush, eraser, linear and radial gradient can now be found in the Layers tool for easy access. Instantly change the background color of the viewer by right-clicking on the background. Activate your selected Process Recipes more easily — the Process button has been moved to the Process Recipes tool.
Also family and portrait photographers can benefit from Capture Pilot. Instead of sending a proof gallery, simply hand over an iPad at the end of the session, and let your client s choose their images. Most photo editing software can do that, Capture One being one of them.
However, Capture One 10 offers a brand new feature allowing you to proof a file according to the process recipe selected. This effectively means that Capture One 10 will display a proof of the picture with the settings the recipe has. No need to guess the effect of the JPEG compression or of the scaling on the sharpness accentuation anymore.
The proof looks exactly like the final exported file. This new feature of Capture One 10 has to be one of my favorite ones!
Many photographers tend to add sharpening to their images in Photoshop using some kind of high pass filter trick. Your picture may need different sharpening for Facebook than it does for a fine art print or a billboard. When exporting, Capture One 10 offers the choice between adding sharpness for print, screen, or none at all. The last option is ideal for retouching. It lets you define the viewing distance of your print, so that sharpening is applied accordingly.
Capture One is what suits my needs best, and I customize it to make my workflow as efficient as possible. To change the background color, change the Color for the Viewer under the Appearance tab in your Capture One Preferences.
Also, while you are in the preferences, set a widish Proof Margin, say of around 30 pixels. With that set you can easily turn on the Proof Margin with the button at the top left corner of the viewing area, next to where it says Background in this screenshot.
Finally, if you have Viewer Labels turned on, showing shooting information and the filename below the large preview of your photo, turn that off by selecting Hide Viewer Labels, under the View menu. Assuming you want to keep those changes and make further adjustments for your print, select Clone Variant from the shortcut menu. Another very useful feature in Capture One, especially when it comes to preparing to print, is the Color Readouts.
Generally, when printing, you want to avoid total black and total white. Select Add Color Readout from the bottom of the Picker tools, which is second from the right in the toolbar above the viewer in the below screenshot. Then, click on some of the key areas of your photograph. I like to check the darkest area, the brightest highlight, and a mid tone. When I placed these Color Readouts on my original, the background was 0, total black, and the shell was , which is pure white.
So, I created a Clone Variant, and adjusted my Levels, to bring these values in just a little, which would be good printing practice. You can see that now, in my resulting image, my darkest background has a luminance of 2.
My brightest highlight, the shells on this Himba Girls traditional necklace, is Her face is Another option for checking the darkest and brightest areas of your print image, are the Exposure Warnings.
These can be turned on with the warning triangle icon. I set my highlight warnings at and my shadow warning at 2. If you want to make any other modifications for print, increasing contrast, changing the colors to stop them going out of gamut, now would be the time to do it. Just as I always printed from Lightroom, I love to be able to print right in my processing and workflow tool.
In Capture One Pro, you can hit the Print button from the top menu at any time, regardless of where you are in the program. The print window opens, and you get to select your settings. This is unlike Lightroom, where you go to the Print module to print. We can create templates in Capture One Pro to save margin and layout information. What I love a lot about C1 already is how fast I can export all the several versions of an image that I need for my clients, my website, social media. Something I still have to deal with is getting my colors exactly the way I want them to, but as in LR, I think this just takes time.
In LR I used to work with the spray paint can tool and could quickly do my first selection. This is actually the first thing I really like about Capture One: Being able to customize my workspace. I can set up my workspace however I want, add and remove the tools that I use in my editing and decide where I want my tools to be on the screen, my filmstrip, etc.
Also, Capture One seems super fast. Once that was done I had to figure out how to use the rest of the tools to match my usual editing style. I found this extremely clever.
By brushing over certain areas and creating a mask, I could control the colors of a specific area without it affecting the rest of the image.
Will there be more presets coming out for Capture One like the Mastin Presets or maybe some converter for Lightroom presets? In Lightroom, you can change the highlights and shadows, but in Capture One, you can adjust the midtones as well. I love this. Like with the Color Editor tool, this gives me much more control over my images. I know there is so much more to explore with Capture One, but for my first go at it, I am really impressed.
I am definitely intrigued!

The new Basic Color Editor also works on Layers, making your layer editing simpler. This is illustrated in the screenshot to the right. This makes it somewhat transparent, but can be seen on most colored backgrounds.
The Horizontal and Vertical positions shown here will place the watermark in the bottom left hand corner. To adjust the position, click on the little hand icon at the top right corner of the Watermark panel. Once this is set, click the Process button, and your selected images will be output to the specified Output folder. Resized, watermarked and ready for the Web. If you want to specify an output location for certain image types, you can select a different location under the File tab.
This is saved in your Process Recipe, which is very useful. To send a selected photograph to another application for editing, you can right click a thumbnail and select Open With. Here you can select the third party application, such as Photoshop, from the submenu. Keep in mind that this method will open the original file without any of the changes from Capture One.
If you want to keep your changes, a better option is to send the image straight to the other program. To do so, right click the image and select Edit With. This opens a dialog for you to select the format and color space etc. Note also that this will create a copy of the image that it sends to Photoshop. Moreover, note that under the Adjustments tab of this dialog, there is a Disable Sharpening option. Most of the time, RAW files need some sharpening to make them look normal again. Keep this option in mind, and uncheck it to enable sharpening when necessary.
The great thing about this Edit With method is that the copy is automatically added to your Catalog. To learn more about our latest version, click here. While Piatek is primarily a wedding photographer, his community of close to 50k followers was founded to share inspiring, fantastic work across all fields and foster the photography journey. He asked a few members to play around with Capture One and share their first impressions of how the photo editing software works for their images and helps them achieve their unique looks and visions.
We know that consistency is key to the work of many photographers, and presets makes this much easier! In Capture One, presets are known as Styles. They function in a similar way with Preview and Apply features, and you can even apply Styles as layers to tweak opacity. Build your own, or purchase Styles from us or other Style creators. There are packs for every look and vision. You can create your own, intuitive interface with only the tools you need and set up keyboard shortcuts to make your workflow faster.
In Capture One you can set your own shortcuts or edit existing ones. Palette Gear and Tangent Panels are also supported, providing endless options for additional controls of Capture One. Sure thing. To me, Tethered Capturing mode is that reason.
Unlike most of its competitors, tethered capture in Capture One is reliable, and adjustments can be made on the fly, which offers clients a better vision of the end result. This is actually the reason I started using Capture One, and why I mention it first.
In the beginning, I used Capture One only for its tethering mode, and I would develop my files in Lightroom. But that quickly changed…. With Capture One 10, still life and macro photographers will be pleased to hear that they can finely set the focus within the app. No need to move to the camera to adjust it. No more trying to get it right with live view mode. Get your white balance right, and your colors will look more realistic than ever, even with the default settings.
Capture One offers great settings right out of the box. They look so much better in Capture One, without adjusting anything.
One of the huge benefits of using Fujifilm X-series camera are the built-in film simulations like Acros, Classic Chrome, Velvia etc. Capture One 12 now adds the ability to change the starting point of your editing to one of the film simulations, as Curves within the Base Characteristics Tool. There are a few places where Capture One falls short.
For those of us who use them regularly, this could be an issue. Into Nik or Topaz filters? No go. Use any of the fantastic portrait packages out there? Too bad. Capture One only has a few third-party plugins and no ability to do HDR or panoramas.
No fun. One thing new in version 12, though, though, is export plug-in support. The history panel is a tool I use often. While Capture One lets you undo edits and easily reset adjustments more easily than Lightroom, actually , not having a history panel really cramps my style.
There are workarounds, like creating a number of clone variants, etc. One of these is that when I rename a file, it moves to somewhere else in the catalog, which can get annoying when trying to compare a series of photos. This bothers me, as it forces me to go to another program if I need one.
There are also no online sharing options, which will definitely affect some folks. The bottom line? Studio photographers might also choose to organize by sessions rather than the catalog. Also, if you need precise and powerful keywording options, Lightroom has this part nailed.
